Where Good Taste Prevails
Margaret Ruth Deimler Gochnaur + Jack Hart Gochnaur
My paternal grandmother was the embodiment of timeless style, grace and grit. She and my grandfather were a career-minded, family-oriented, play-hard, globe-traveling pair. They were shaped from the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s. My grandmother was my muse before I even realized the impact of her influential style, manners and determination. Most importantly, she imparted an emphasis on quality. I can still hear her say, "spend the money, quality will last". In her day, she was the first girl to be on the high school basketball team and ran track before the girls were even recognized. She marched through rain and snow on her 3-mile walk to school. As a mother of two boys, she carved a successful career outside their finely-appointed, loving home. Her job took her on oversea travels -just adding to her sophisticated appeal. She was raised a strong, simple girl in a large farm family in the Pennsylvania countryside; yet, her family had roots in Germany, spawned from a dynamic automaker. Nonetheless, a modest and uber classy dame she was, who will remain forever a superstar in my eyes.
